The Oakville MCMs made it 11 straight victories in dominant fashion with a 6-1 win over Castlebridge FC, clinching the league title with three games still to play.
MCM came out firing and opened the scoring just five minutes in when Braden Culver’s sharp build-up play found an open Josh Portillo, who coolly slotted home to make it 1-0. Only two minutes later, Nico Mejia doubled the lead, finishing off a quick attack to put MCM firmly in control early.
Despite the fast start, MCM weren’t at their best defensively, with several errant passes – especially down the right side giving Castlebridge opportunities to stay in the game. Those mistakes eventually cost MCM, as Sameer committed a needless foul just outside the box. From the free kick, goalkeeper Adam Scanlon decided on perhaps the smallest outside of the wall in MCM history, leaving out the likes of Stevan, Liam, and Nick, instead settling on Nico and Danny :). The Castlebridge taker curled it over the wall and into the back of the net to cut the lead to 2-1.
Just moments later, MCM were forced into an early change when Sameer was subbed off after a string of errors, claiming he was dizzy. Quick-witted Coach Gibby was ready with the reply: “Your first-half display was making us all dizzy!” — a line that had the bench in stitches.
MCM soon regained control, and ten minutes later Nico bagged his brace after good work from Josh, restoring the two-goal cushion. The half ended 3-1.
The second half was all MCM as they created chance after chance, rattling the posts and crossbar four times. Finally, with 28 minutes left, Nico, who had worked tirelessly all match completed his hat trick to seal Man of the Match honours. With seven minutes remaining, Jacob Gramega notched his third of the season before Shane Provost capped off the scoring with a special moment, finding the net with his son and biggest fan on hand to witness it. The match finished 6-1.
Claiming his second Parrot Award of the season was Lucas for his 10:13am cry-off, while Nico’s hat trick ensured his place in the spotlight as the star of the day.
With the win, MCM not only secured the result but also clinched the league title in style, with three games still to go.
ps – Special thanks to Liam, who topped it all off by bringing a cracking post-game cooler stocked with a fine selection and plenty of ice to keep the celebrations rolling.
