MCM Hit Stride with 6–1 Rout Over RR World to Stay Unbeaten and Top of the Table
Oakville MCM’s 50th anniversary season continued in emphatic fashion Sunday with a commanding 6–1 win over RR World. The result keeps MCM perfect on the season with a 5–0 record and sees them sitting tied atop the table.
The match kicked off under absolutely sweltering conditions, with temperatures soaring past 40°C at gametime. To add to the spectacle, MCM was hit with its first kit clash in many seasons. With no alternative from the visitors, Coach Braithwaite was forced to dig deep into the club’s kit archives — unearthing the beloved but long-retired 2014 Thursday baby blues.
Before kickoff, Coach Braithwaite stood silently in the pregame huddle, staring at his squad like a proud dad, soaking in the sight of the throwback blues back in action. In that moment — possibly from the heat — he swears he saw Geary, PK, Cozmin & Razor in those kits, and even Delaney casually sipping a Thursday nighter on the sideline. “The heat really got me seeing things,” he later mumbled, wiping a tear and a gallon of sweat off his brow. Whether it was nostalgia or hallucination, one thing was clear — the retro kits still had magic.
RR World didn’t exactly come prepared either — arriving late and starting the match with just nine players. MCM, smelling opportunity, came flying out of the gate and immediately pinned the short-handed side deep. Over the course of the first half, RR World players slowly filtered in, eventually getting to a full 11 on the field — with two substitutes to spare — but by then, the momentum was already firmly with the home side.
MCM opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a well-worked team play. Brennan McNicoll, pulling the strings in midfield, delivered a smart setup to Josh Portillo, who made no mistake — blasting it top bin to give MCM the early lead.
Just 10 minutes later, MCM nearly doubled their advantage. After a slick run and clever footwork, Justin Johnston earned himself a penalty, but couldn’t convert as his spot kick went wide.
Eight minutes later, the chance at redemption came. Marko Vidovich was fouled in the box, and in typical MCM fashion, the squad gave the ball right back to Johnston. This time, he made no mistake — slotting it coolly to the bottom left corner to make it 2–0.
With four minutes left in the half, MCM struck again. Marko got on the scoresheet, capping off a dominant first half by making it 3–0 heading into the break.
The second half opened shakily. Three substitutions disrupted the rhythm, and a poor giveaway allowed RR World to pull one back just six minutes in. The momentum briefly shifted, and so did the energy — until Luke let his teammates have it, calling out the lacklustre play and demanding better.
It worked.
After that moment and a key midfield shift, MCM snapped back into gear — composed, aggressive, and back to “the MCM way.” The structure returned, the ball started doing the work, and the goals followed in rapid succession.
With 24 minutes left, Justin Johnston bagged his second of the match, restoring MCM’s three-goal cushion.
Then, with 18 minutes to play, Josh Portillo added his second, to make it 5–1.
And finally — the cherry on top. With 15 minutes left, Jacob Gramegna delivered the moment of the match: a goal scored directly from a corner kick, curling beautifully into the far post. It was an Olympico — and incredibly, the second season in a row an MCM player has accomplished the rare feat. Last year’s stunner came from Nico Mejia.
With 12 minutes left, RR World — down a man, five goals deep, and fully baked under the sun — threw in the towel and called it a day, ending the match early in what most agreed was a mutual act of mercy.
