Oakville MCM Shows Grit in 2–1 Comeback Win
Oakville MCM proved once again why they sit atop the table, battling from behind to earn a hard-fought 2–1 comeback victory this past Sunday at Shell Park.
The opening 22 minutes saw MCM dominate possession, playing on the front foot and creating chance after chance — but they just couldn’t find the finishing touch. Despite pinning the opposition deep in their half, the breakthrough remained elusive.
Momentum began to shift in the second part of the first half, as the Lakers grew into the game and began to threaten in transition. The opening goal came off a controversial offside shout that was waved off by the linesman. With MCM calling for the flag, the Lakers attacker was allowed to continue his run unchallenged. He went in alone on goal, where MCM’s showstopper Adam Scanlon came off his line and was adjudged to have brought him down in the box. The referee pointed to the spot, and the Lakers converted the penalty to take a 1–0 lead.
The half ended 1–0 Lakers.
The second half saw MCM come out ready and motivated to correct the wrongs of the first 45. They returned to dictating play, creating waves of pressure, but continued to miss the final product. The finishing just wasn’t there on the day, and frustration started to build.
The Lakers could sense it — and responded by slowing the game down, dropping deep and committing to a low block to protect their lead.
Eventually, MCM’s persistence paid off. With 17 minutes left, Luke Sewell whipped in a pinpoint cross that found the head of Lucas Harper, who buried the equalizer to make it 1–1.
Six minutes later, with MCM pushing with all the momentum, another dangerous cross into the box found Jay Lyamah, who expertly headed the ball back across goal. Nico Mejia, showing his strength and awareness, shielded off the defender and left it perfectly for the onrushing Lucas Harper, who hammered home the winner, the three points, and the Man of the Match cup in one emphatic finish.
From there, the backline held firm. Adam Scanlon made a key late save, and the defensive unit of Luke, Sameer, Nick, Stevan, Roman, and Peter absorbed pressure brilliantly, staying compact and clearing out any danger in the dying minutes.
And taking home the Parrot, after making us all wait for his long-awaited debut, was Cameron Medwin — affectionately nicknamed “The Bald Pirlo” by Sameer. Cam showed his steady, deep-lying playmaker qualities, controlling the tempo and showing off his Pirlo-like decision-making… just minus the flowing hair.
With the two award winners both follically challenged, a cheeky question was posed post-match to Coach Braithwaite:
“Do only bald players win these awards?”
The coach, smiling, refused to confirm or deny — but the results speak for themselves.
The final whistle confirmed MCM’s seventh straight victory, keeping them perfect at 7–0 and continuing their push toward the top prize.
