Oakville MCM extended their unbeaten run in the 2025 season with a gritty 1-0 home win over a stubborn YMFT side on Sunday morning at Shell Park. In a match that saw MCM take control early and never look back, it was 2024 MCM Golden Boot winner Nico Mejia who delivered the game’s lone goal just 10 minutes in.
From the opening whistle, MCM came out flying — dominating possession, pinning YMFT deep, and generating early chances in what was easily their sharpest start to a game this season. The breakthrough came in the 10th minute and was sparked by some excellent work down the left flank from Brennan McNicoll. After beating his defender, McNicoll delivered a clever low cross into the box, where Mejia timed his run perfectly and made no mistake with the finish — a cool, clinical strike to make it 1-0.
Despite MCM’s control, YMFT did have their moments. With 15 minutes left in the first half, they nearly equalized on a low-driven effort that slid just wide of the bottom left corner. Then in the second half, with the game hanging in the balance, YMFT looked certain to level the score with a point-blank chance in the box. But just when it seemed inevitable, out of nowhere came the outstretched hand of Adam Scanlon, diving to his left and denying what looked like a sure goal. It was the kind of game-saving moment that wins matches — and Scanlon delivered when it mattered most.
And speaking of delivering — step forward Sameer. After weeks of (loudly) reminding Coach Braithwaite that he never gets to play a full 90, today was finally the day. Sameer got the nod and turned in a stellar performance at right back, winning nearly every challenge, locking down his side of the field, and proving his point in style. For his efforts, he took home Man of the Match honours.
But that wasn’t the only prize. Sameer also took home The Parrot — not for his defending, but for his mouth. In a performance that managed to irritate just about everyone on the pitch, Sameer successfully got under the skin of the referee, both linesmen, multiple YMFT players, and probably a few spectators too. A true two-way threat — defensively sound and verbally relentless.
Though the second goal never came, the professionalism in MCM’s performance ensured the single strike was all they needed. Another clean sheet, three more points, and a firm reminder that this team can close out a result just as well as they can score goals.
